We love receiving food gifts during the Holidays! Cookies, candy, wine, cheese, smoked sausage, fruit…you name it, you can be certain we will enjoy them. But it is just as much fun to pick out gifts for my family and friends.  My mom has always said you should give gifts you like receiving (in other words, don’t recycle that ugly sweater from your long-lost aunt).  So following Mom’s advice, I often share food gifts during the holidays.

In the next few posts, I will be sharing some of my ideas for both traditional and somewhat non-traditional holiday food gifts. This first one probably falls into the non-traditional category.  It should please your friends that like a little spice in their life—Cajun Seasoning Mix presented in adorable, tightly sealed jars.

First, I measured each of the following ingredients into separate bowls.

Cajun Seasoning Mix

1 1/2 Tbsp. salt
1 1/2 Tbsp. garlic powder
2 Tbsp. paprika
1 Tbsp. ground black pepper
1 Tbsp. onion powder
1 Tbsp. cayenne pepper
1 Tbsp. dried oregano
1 Tbsp. dried thyme

Note:  If you don’t have a 1/2 Tbsp. measuring spoon, 1 1/2 Tbsp. = 1 Tbsp. plus 1 1/2 tsp.

Then I combined them in a bowl and stirred the spices to ensure they were equally distributed throughout the mixture.  Of course, you could just measure the ingredients and place them directly into the same bowl (less clean up and no pretty picture), but be careful to remember what you have already added and measure carefully.

Then I used a small plastic funnel to fill each of the cute jars with the spice mixture.  The recipe above was just enough to fill the three small jars shown below.

You can print out the spice mixture recipe to include with your gift so that your friend can refill the jar when he or she needs more.  You can also include the spice mixture in a gift basket with other ingredients for a “spicy” meal.  Have fun and let your imagination help you create a great gift.
